El Gouna is a community that prioritises concern for the environment. In fact, El Gouna was named the first area in Africa to receive a UN-sponsored Green Town Award for its efforts toward creating a greener, more sustainable future for everyone.

In pursuit of this goal, El Gouna partnered with the Egyptian Ministries of Tourism and Economic Cooperation and Development to act as the first destination in the country to represent the Green Star Hotel Initiative. This effort serves as the Middle East’s first tourism-based ecological certification program.

The Chedi El Gouna believes deeply in acting in concert with our city, and acting responsibly when it comes to our environment. That’s why we’re committed to minimising our ecological footprint within a region that was conceived as a contained, self-sustaining ecosystem. In doing so, it’s our hope that we can serve as an excellent example for hotels around the country, as well as around the world.

Building Standards

The Chedi El Gouna’s buildings are built in accordance with the low-energy standard. They feature systematic air exchange and filtering, which ensures good air quality.

Energy Recovery

Intelligent green construction methods and the energy-saving technologies have been used.

Recycling Stations

The Chedi El Gouna has installed multiple areas for guests to deposit recyclable items. The city at large has also made many collection bins available for recyclable waste.

Zero Waste

Our home of El Gouna has adopted a revolutionary waste management system in which we are proud to participate. More than 85% of local refuse is recycled. All of the property’s drinking straws, stirrers, etc. are made of recyclable materials. The Chedi is minimizing the usage of the multi-use poli-carbonate water bottles and successfully implementing the Brita water filtration system and refilling glass bottles.

Laundry Facilities

Bed linens and towels from The Chedi El Gouna are washed in-house using environmentally-friendly materials, and with electrical appliances that utilise low-power consumption.

Responsible Water Usage

100% of El Gouna’s water is recycled, and 95% of its drinking water is supplied by two state-of-the-art, low-temperature desalination plants.

Local Food Production

Nearly half of El Gouna’s food is produced locally and sustainably, including produce, meat and seafood. This both supports local farms, and minimises the need to burn fossil fuels to ship goods to the area.

Energy-Efficient Appliances

The Chedi El Gouna prioritises the purchase and usage of appliances with low power consumption.

Bio Waste

Green waste, as well as material from grease traps are collected and sent to a facility that generates fossil fuel or fertiliser. Disposal is coordinated with the city. This reduces the number of trips and optimises loads.
